It's my birthday today. Not a big deal for me anymore. But, there is already cake in the refrigerator and ice cream in the freezer. I am going to try to save calories for a cake and ice cream treat so I do not go over on my calories.

I got the results back from the MRI of my knee yesterday. The doctor says I have a huge tear in the meniscus and is referring me to an orthopedic surgeon. Anyone have experience with this type of surgery? What I can expect as far as pain, recovery, prognosis? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime while I wait for surgery, I will continue to log every bite I put into my mouth. Despite my lack of activity, I have lost almost 12 pounds since Christmas. I am beginning to feel a difference in the way my clothes fit, so that is definitely motivation. Also, although I fell and made the knee problem much worse, I know this is a weight-related issue as well. So, despite this setback, I remain focused and motivated. I feel different about this weight loss journey than my past attempts. I really "believe" I can succeed this time. I will keep at this, one day at a time.

Happy birthday 🎂! The surgery you are having has come a very long way. You can even watch it while it takes place. Usually done on an out patient basis. May need a cane for awhile and some physical therapy.

Shiny50, I don't have a meniscus in my right knee...lost it in a catastrophic accident in 1997, however post surgery rehab and continuing to strengthen the surrounding tissue with non-impact exercise (elliptical & biking mainly) has kept me mobile and active in my day to day life and able to do many fun things too. No more running, squash or other impact sports but still a long way from a knee replacement and its been 21 years. Good luck!!

Happy bd!🎈🎈 I tore my meniscus a year ago when I fell 12 ft off a cliff on my mountain bike. Mine was borderline for surgery so I opted to try therapy 1st. It took awhile but Im glad I didnt do surgery. I was back in gym after a month of pt, with a brace but I could still w/o. It still bothers me when its cold but otherwise Im good. Good luck!

Happy Birthday! I had the same surgery on my left knee and went home the same day and I live upstairs. You will do well if you take your pain meds and keep icing your knee. Physical was very helpful and I made a full recovery. Good Luck! 🍀

Happy Birthday! It is my husband’s birthday today, too. You definitely need to allow yourself cake and ice cream today. Congrats on losing 12 pounds! That is awesome and makes me motivated to stick to my diet. I hope your knee heals quickly.

I hope you find motivation, as I did, in knowing that every pound you lose equals 3 pounds of pressure removed from your poor knee.

I had my knee rebuilt when I was 18 from frequent dislocations. Too tall, too hippy and ligaments at sling shot angles. This repair left me with a knee that ground thru the cartilage and had a couple tears... The tears hurt a lot more than the damage they are doing, a couple mm flap can get caught and or bend back making you feel like you will be cripple for life, but it's not that bad. I've had them go in twice since the initial surgery in 1989, and each time i was up and walking a day or two later. Ice, rest, all good. The lighter your body, the less demand on the joints so the more you lose the better. All the best and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

My torn meniscus was removed during a day surgery. I wasn't able to stay off it as recommended nor follow up with therapy so I tend to have pain from time to time.
