Tracking calories works. Adjusting your calorie level as your activity level changes is necessary. There is certainly some guess work involved in figuring out calories burned, but a reasonable guess is better than doing nothing. I am also often estimating some of my meals. But, I've learned that no tracking causes the scale to steadily rise.

I use my Apple Watch and wear it 24 hours per day most days. It seems to be pretty accurate in counting calories burned. It take much of the guess work out figuring out calories burned.

@recompforhealth I have a watch that works with my android phone. It records heart rate and steps. While this info helps me guess at calorie burn, it is useless for gym, volleyball and pickleball where my intensity of calorie burn varies greatly. If I play matches with weak opponents, my calorie burn is dramatically reduced. The opposite is true for well matched opponents. Can the Apple watch do the more sophisticated measurements to help me?

It does for me. It issues heart rate I think. The faster the heart rate the more calories it logs. It might use some other factors too. But, it definitely seems to be pretty accurate vs intensity.

I will post a pic of what it logs so you can see mine.

Just your awareness of calorie burn variability ist refreshing! Your general awareness and calorie awareness is great… but, the only way to count calories ingested is to weigh or measure the food we eat, guessing amounts could be much more inaccurate in calories than different burn rates in pickle ball. We do not guess, or ever contemplate guessing at checkbook entries….

@edbannister. I'm in weight maintenance rather than weight loss. I plan on logging for the remainder of my life. So, measuring everything consumes too much time. My wife prepares many meals and there is no way that she measuring everything. She thinks I'm crazy for doing this anyway. Purchased meals are the worst to figure out. Sometimes there are calorie counts on the menu, but mostly not. I've measured enough to estimate. But, if I get a better fitness watch, maybe I can do better on the calorie burn.
